20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

I had a tattered yellowed paperback copy as a child, cover held on with scotch tape and sections of pages falling out, I assume I took it from my parents shelves though don't remember a time before it was on my own shelf. Have always loved the naturalist observations of life at sea, and at times in my teens identified with Nemo - living beyond the reach of governments and news. Now I own this cute neon-octopus-printed hardcover edition instead, but the same story inside.

This classic adventure follows the cast of the Abraham Lincoln, a naval vessel hunting a mysterious sea monster, as they are captured by Captain Nemo and taken aboard the Nautilus, an advanced electric submarine. Verne’s narrative blends rigorous scientific observation with high-stakes maritime action, guiding readers through the deep ocean’s hidden geography, exotic marine life, and the captain’s enigmatic philosophy. The prose is lucid and encyclopedic, characteristic of the popular science fiction of the nineteenth century, balancing detailed naturalist descriptions of underwater ecosystems with the tension of a man living beyond the reach of governments and society.
