One of my all-time favorite books, I love Stephenson's quirky language and humorous digressions from the multiple main storylines which weave together into a satisfying whole. Manages to be a great story, entertainingly written, and contains a lot of deep nerd lore accurately explained not just a cyber ~vibe~. Also prescient depiction of wokeness, cloud computing, digital currency and and the importance of jurisdiction as the internet increasingly IS real life.

Cryptonomicon weaves together two distinct narratives: a 1942 account of Lawrence Pritchard Waterhouse, a mathematical genius in the US Navy, who joins the ultra-secret Detachment 2702 to manage the Allied decryption of the German Enigma code, and a contemporary story of his grandson, Randy Waterhouse, a crypto-hacker attempting to establish a sovereign data haven in Southeast Asia. As Randy and Amy Shaftoe, Bobby Shaftoe’s granddaughter, race to salvage a sunken Nazi submarine, their efforts uncover a decades-old conspiracy involving an unbreakable code and the future of digital liberty. The novel juxtaposes the high-stakes cryptographic chess match of World War II with the emerging realities of the World Wide Web, exploring how historical obsessions shape modern technological infrastructure.
