How to Design and Build Your Own House
I've owned this book since my teens, a handbook on owner-builders which I've long aspired to be. In practice I probably won't DIY my home and the construction tech in the book is a bit dated, but it is a beginner-friendly guide to really understanding all the layers and systems creating our interior environments and the process of how they're constructed.
This practical handbook guides readers through the entire process of designing and constructing a custom home, from initial site analysis and floor plan development to the physical assembly of structural systems. Written for owner-builders and those seeking a deeper understanding of residential construction, the text breaks down complex building processes into accessible steps. It covers essential topics such as foundation types, framing, roofing, and interior finishing, emphasizing how various layers and systems interact to create a functional living environment. While the specific construction technologies and materials discussed reflect the standards of the mid-1980s, the book remains a valuable resource for grasping the fundamental logic and sequence of home building.
