Dana, a Black woman in 1970s California, is abruptly pulled from her life and transported to the antebellum South, where she must save Rufus, the white son of a plantation owner, from drowning. As she is drawn back repeatedly, each visit grows longer and more dangerous, forcing her to navigate the brutal realities of slavery while trying to return to her own time. The narrative explores the psychological toll of this displacement, the complex and often violent dynamics between enslaved people and slaveholders, and the inescapable legacy of history.
