Tomb of the Golden Bird
In this eighteenth installment of the Amelia Peabody series, the Emerson family finds themselves locked in a tense rivalry with Lord Carnarvon and Howard Carter over the excavation rights to the Valley of the Kings. After being banned from the East Valley, Radcliffe Emerson’s attempts to undermine his rivals backfire, forcing the family to settle for a less promising dig in the West Valley while watching from the sidelines as Carter makes his historic discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb. The narrative blends the historical backdrop of 1922 Egypt with a domestic mystery, as a sinister group of villains lures Emerson and his son into a trap, demanding to know the whereabouts of a specific individual. Driven by Amelia’s characteristic curiosity and concern for her family, the plot shifts from archaeological competition to a quest to uncover a dark family secret that threatens the safety of the entire household.
