So, if you disagree, perhaps justify that with an explanation. Allowing people to upvote that. This clarifies the intention of the vote.
a reply can clarify but it also amplifies the disagreement and, on Twitter etc, puts the debate onto other ppl's feeds giving it more eyeballs than if ignored... when 100 ppl want to register disapproval you end up with 100 replies and a viral post, vs 100 silent frowns and no amplification
