@rickyflows @BenRatkaj @RandomSprint Every state is its own story, but… for example in Virginia precincts can’t contain more than 5K registered voters, and you need at least 4 ppl to run a precinct so that the checks and balances of the ballot custody work, and parties / candidates are encouraged to send observers
@rickyflows @BenRatkaj @RandomSprint So it gets very expensive to keep voting open for multiple days, esp with all the need to seal and lock up all the votes and ballots every day. So we have early voting at a small # of sites, and vote by mail, but Election Day is only one day.
@rickyflows @BenRatkaj @RandomSprint Oh also I should mention that the vast majority of Election Day votes *are* counted within an hour or two of closing the polls, it’s the provisional ballot edge cases, late arriving mailed ballots, etc that cause the final count to drag on.
@rickyflows @BenRatkaj @RandomSprint And in some states they don’t let them start opening the mailed ballots till end of the day, so w Covid shift to mailed ballots the workload and time to count all the ballots grew a lot in those states
