wrt YIMBY & homeless shelters- I live within walking distance of a long-term shelter & rehab in one direction and a cluster of group homes in the other; during a covid spike, the county short-term shelter moved into a nearby motel for a few months... ppl from the shelters sit in the town square during the day, visit the library and community center, hang out around the McDonalds, ride the bus... they're generally friendly and cheerful, not miserable / scary / desperate and I've never seen a used needle or smashed window like ppl describe in SF. Make high quality services available without waitlists, do drug / mental health diversion for nuisance crimes to encourage ppl to use the services, and fund law enforcement to deal w those few who are still causing harm to the community.
