@knowclarified I think most ppl have an internal sense of fairness & reciprocity... someone does something nice for me... if I feel I don't deserve it, there's uneasy cognitive dissonance, at least subconsciously- do I owe them a debt? are they manipulating me? is there a catch? am I missing something? the uneasy tension pushes for resolution, a balancing of the scales; effusive gratitude is a way of asking for reassurance... being on the receiving side of effusive gratitude can also be uncomfortable- subconsciously adjusts their mental accounting towards "this person feels they owe me"- many ppl will subconsciously balance the scales in some way
