imo the common mistake is to exclude some outgroup from your sphere of concern- to label them the enemy, to treat them as irredeemable, to glory in their downfall rather than seek reconciliation & redemption.

and for me, my quaker christian faith calls me to treat *everyone* as my neighbor, to respect their innate human dignity & goodness, to believe in the possibility of redemption of even the worst of the worst

imo regardless of religious persuasion, just on a practical level- unless you are seriously proposing the death penalty for your enemies, if you don't want endless war you have to imagine a world in which your enemies have some kind of livable existence
