imo a sociopath doesn't abide by *any* prosocial limits on their selfishness, but in practice it's often used subjectively when someone violates someone else's limits, which is how so many people can sincerely angrily label each other "sociopathic" after conflict https://x.com/mimi10v3/status/1877897499253293307

we all live according to some mix of selfish strategies to get our needs met and prosocial limits on how we interact with others to do so there are multiple attractor basins / patterns this can take, i wish we had names for them

as we mix cultures and try to invent new better ones we're having more and more clashes between ppl following incompatible Codes of behavior, playing different games with each other. i really hope it doesn't end in lowest trust common denominator. tricky to coordinate though…

and speaking as someone who's tried it, no you can't live by all the prosocial limits at once- the scrupulosity -> suicidal depression pipeline

i think this is why i'm "maximally charitable" wrt bad behavior - i look for how it would fit within *some* ethical framework and only conclude someone is "sociopathic" when i've seen them do enough harm from enough different perspectives that i can't find any other explanation
