i think also it is the social part more than the hierarchy part- that normies just know who's higher or lower and how to act accordingly without needing it spelled out with legible rules (and in fact usually resisting spelling it out- imo for the very good reason that spelling it out leads to annoying attempts to rule-lawyer and hack the system vs accepting it)
