Accelerando

7.5/10
mimi’s rating

My rating is mostly for predicting a future of byzantine ai corporate structures and a weird mixture of virtual and meat humans - more interesting and closer to accurate imo than most sci fi dystopias.

Accelerando follows three generations of the Macx clan as they navigate the accelerating trajectory toward the technological singularity. Manfred, an entrepreneur whose consciousness is split between the physical world and the internet, deals in intelligence amplification; his daughter Amber flees to the outer solar system as an indentured astronaut; and her son Sirhan finds his fate entangled with the survival of humanity itself. As artificial intelligences surpass human intellect and nanotechnology reshapes reality, the family struggles to maintain coherence in a world where biological life is becoming obsolete.

The novel’s structure mirrors its theme, with chapters growing shorter and more fragmented as time accelerates, creating a sense of dizzying momentum. Stross blends hard science fiction concepts with a fast-paced, often satirical narrative voice, exploring the implications of posthuman evolution, corporate AI, and the dissolution of traditional human identity. The story culminates in a confrontation with an incomprehensible force that threatens the solar system, forcing the characters to grapple with the limits of their own evolved cognition.
