Fall; or, Dodge in Hell
Richard "Dodge" Forthrast, a tech billionaire who founded a gaming empire, is declared brain dead after a medical accident. Following his pre-arranged will, his family submits his brain to a cryonics firm, where his neural data is scanned and uploaded to the cloud. As technology advances, Dodge is revived in the Bitworld, a digital afterlife where consciousness persists as code. The narrative explores the societal, spiritual, and existential implications of this new reality, contrasting the limitations of the physical world with the chaotic, often dystopian nature of digital immortality. Stephenson blends high-concept speculation with a sprawling plot involving corporate intrigue, religious movements, and the struggle for identity in a post-mortal existence.
