In a world where the pursuit of knowledge is treated as a sacred, monastic vocation, young scholar Fraa Erasmas lives within the Concent of Saunt Edhar, a fortress of mathematics and philosophy isolated from the chaotic outside world. For centuries, the avout have preserved their intellectual traditions through strict ritual and austerity, surviving historical cataclysms by retreating further into abstraction. However, during the rare Apert festival, which allows limited contact with the secular world, Erasmas is drawn into a crisis that threatens the stability of both his cloistered society and the broader civilization. As he navigates a complex web of alliances and ancient secrets, the narrative expands from a contemplative study of mathematical history into a sweeping exploration of cosmology, parallel realities, and the fragile boundaries between different modes of existence.
