  1. Nov 4, 2021Twitter · reply@CALamity25 @Grant_Case @daveweigel If they didn't want to come back regardless of vaccination, fine, but then they shouldn't have been at the front of the line. And (locally) they promised kids could catch up with summer school, then couldn't recruit enough teachers even with bonuses and rescinded invites.

  6. Nov 4, 2021Twitter · reply@combienDUtemps @Grant_Case @daveweigel maybe no one can "control" them, but Youngkin's charter schools plan seems like a better bet than Dem's teachers unions donations and campaign appearances.

  9. Nov 3, 2021Twitter · reply@Grant_Case @daveweigel I'm a center-left voter and donated to Northam's campaign, but voted for Youngkin because I'm still angry about teachers union putting themselves first in line for vaccines but then fighting against in-person classes after teachers were vaxxed.
  10. Nov 3, 2021Twitter · reply@NancyLeeGrahn @daveweigel We are a purple state and McAuliffe miscalculated when he chose to focus his campaign on Trump and national politics rather than on how a McAuliffe governorship would improve our lives.

  12. Nov 3, 2021Twitter · reply@robinhanson In lieu of that question, college bf would offer to get me a chocolate milkshake... By unspoken custom, I'd reciprocate with a calm explanation of what was bothering me. It was a good system- show concern without guessing at the issue while also improving mood via chocolate.
  13. Nov 3, 2021Twitter · reply@robinhanson "no I'm not upset" can also translate to "No, I'm trying to hold it together here but if you make me talk about it I'm likely to start crying and saying things I'll regret"

  47. Nov 1, 2021Twitter · reply@mybetterme3 Of course I'm not opposed to that happening too, but on an individual level people should be free to seek their own best life wherever they think they'll find it.
  48. Nov 1, 2021Twitter · reply@zackmdavis Every few yrs I have a dream where I eat meat- as a longtime vegan it's distressing, but I've found that my subconscious uses the emotional charge of meat-eating to bring my attn to some other detail of the dream that I've been neglecting- it's a symbolic priority flag
  49. Nov 1, 2021Twitter · reply@zackmdavis If you don't know, just let your subconscious continue to explore till it becomes clear 🙂 dreams are tricksy beasts, surfacing bits of our subconscious processing through metaphorical narrative
  50. Nov 1, 2021Twitter · reply@adamhoov @elonmusk @Forbes Why does it matter when so many brokerages offer fractional shares?
  51. Nov 1, 2021Twitter · reply@stumanchuwpg @Aella_Girl I'd support most any proposal that opens up opportunity... Like, maybe we need a refugee version of Shark Tank where @mcuban etc go scouting for talent and the reward is a visa to go with the investment? Invite the American public to get to know immigrants doing great things
  52. Nov 1, 2021Twitter · reply@stumanchuwpg @Aella_Girl Reform to a points system so we prioritize ppl with the most desired traits and increase weight on economic factors while increasing total numbers, so we let in more immigrants with the capability to assimilate quickly and be contributors to economy and tax revenue.
  53. Nov 1, 2021Twitter · reply@stumanchuwpg @Aella_Girl Yeah, imo we should start by fixing the status of the people who are already here, so everyone has the power to report abusive conditions without fearing deportation... Then remove the per-country green card caps- Indian techies who pay tons of taxes are in a 10 yr line.

  56. Nov 1, 2021Twitter · reply@stumanchuwpg @Aella_Girl I'm not sure and I think it's a bad analogy because economic activity is not zero-sum. Some of our best science and tech has come from immigrants fleeing repression and poverty- how many more are we keeping out with restrictive caps?
  57. Nov 1, 2021Twitter · reply@stumanchuwpg @Aella_Girl Obv a foolish retort, but I *do* choose to live in an immigrant heavy neighborhood and work alongside immigrants for a company founded by an immigrant- those who are here are my neighbors and friends, I wish others like them were not being excluded.
  58. Nov 1, 2021Twitter · reply@Aella_Girl 🤣 the funny thing is how little most Americans appreciate that we *are* the rich... if we actually cared about the global poor we would open the borders! Hunger comes from local dysfunction but also from int'l refusal to allow economic refugees to choose a better govt.
  59. Nov 1, 2021Twitter · reply@mattyglesias @GarettJones @asymmetricinfo Should we bully drug companies to raise prices for other countries as well?
  60. Nov 1, 2021Twitter · reply@arvin_foroutan @paulg If they're really "hoarding", all the attacks are counterproductive to getting them to let go- ppl hoard to feel safe and in control when they're feeling scared and threatened. Bezos may fall into this category, where richest man in the world still doesn't feel like "enough"

  67. Nov 1, 2021Twitter · reply@tszzl (srsly- I live in commie LARPer HQ- the miserably-online apologist scribblers are hard at work explaining how $6B is like spare change, and anyway if Elon's factories weren't exploiting workers and buying conflict minerals no one would be hungry in the first place)
  68. Nov 1, 2021Twitter · reply@tszzl Most of the true believers probably didn't see it- they use privilege filters to center marginalized voices and create safe spaces free of billionaire microaggressions.
  69. Nov 1, 2021Twitter · reply@tszzl I'll take the other side of that bet... Leftist screeds have never been confined by mere *numbers* and *logic*- what matters is whether it *feels* true

  74. Nov 1, 2021Twitter · reply@bryan_caplan @UChicago Feel like this is a subtweet of your students this semester... Not getting any good questions?
  75. Nov 1, 2021Twitter · reply@Duderichy Seriously though! Upper classes should be out riding and hunting and dancing at balls, not hunched over a desk 😛
  76. Nov 1, 2021Twitter · reply@RokoMijic @typesfast Anyway point is "yards are full" is legit problem but from the outside you can't necessarily figure out how to go fetch your container within the limit... There's a perception that ppl w full warehouse are leaving containers in transit as temp storage, hard to say given the chaos
  77. Nov 1, 2021Twitter · reply@RokoMijic @typesfast lots of containers "lost" in the stacks- the RFID tags are iffy because surrounded by stacks of metal, as a backup software can usually predict what's where by pattern of other containers, but that's not working now because stacks are too full and stuff is anywhere it fits
  78. Nov 1, 2021Twitter · reply@RokoMijic @typesfast So all the slots are full but most are no-shows, so containers scheduled for pickup are just sitting... Also trucks need to unload empties and there's no elbow room for them...
  79. Nov 1, 2021Twitter · reply@RokoMijic @typesfast Things are kinda F'ed right now- yards are so full it's hard to move things around because no spare space... Truckers wait for hours to pick up a load, then run out of time before regulated rest... To increase odds they book multiple appointment slots...

  84. Oct 31, 2021Twitter · reply@justinamash @oscredwin I think this illustrates human nature- put us in an uncomfortable environment with no control or escape and we become very risk averse and willing to toss civil rights out the window to feel a little bit safer and more in control of the situation.
  85. Oct 31, 2021Twitter · reply@InvictusDude Oh, also, idk if makes a diff for morning sensitivity to light, but I have my bathroom light set up to only come on very minimally dim if my bed lights are off and it's after bedtime, but then max brightness in the am if cloudy (or off if getting sufficient lumens from window)
  86. Oct 31, 2021Twitter · reply@InvictusDude Cool! I know at one point FitBit had a vibration alarm... and I remember some kind of wearable that tracked sleep phases and would wake you when you're at your lightest sleep near the desired wake time.

  88. Oct 31, 2021Twitter · reply@phloxyrock @AngelaVolkov @AgreeT0D1sagree Carbon tax it all so the rich will pay their fair share. Rebate the money as a UBI so those who are consuming less than average will come out ahead.
  89. Oct 31, 2021Twitter · reply@eggy_egregore Lol! Idk, I feel like swedish fish are more yin than the twizzlers- too red and fruity
  90. Oct 31, 2021Twitter · reply@InvictusDude (but if you're not rising with the sun and ok to sleep in on cloudy days, automated shades & lights might help? I do sleep through the light if I'm really tired, but it still seems to lighten my sleep so the second alarm isn't such an unpleasant startle)
  91. Oct 31, 2021Twitter · reply@InvictusDude Oh and I have a IR controller for my mini split AC so it also adjusts the temp down for sleep and up for wake. Have blackout shades which are not automated but get eastern light once I get up and open them, and yeah natural light is probably best if the timing works for you
  92. Oct 31, 2021Twitter · reply@InvictusDude Usually wake up gently from the music and light- they're also color tuned for a cold morning light (then shift warmer over the course of the day), the shutoff just signals that it's time to stop daydreaming and get out of bed.

  96. Oct 31, 2021Twitter · reply@InvictusDude I use smart bulbs and an Alexa as my everyday alarm- slowly brighten and increase volume, then cut off sound at programmed alarm time. Generally wakes me up but I'll sleep through if I'm really tired... Add a louder alarm in neighboring room if I really need to be on time.

  99. Oct 31, 2021Twitter · reply@kristineCreates @robinhanson This report supports my position - they're measuring "happiness" via metrics that correlate to freedom to consume goods & services, which include GDP and income as two of the 6 factors. We're consumers first, workers only incidentally to produce goods for consumption.
  100. Oct 31, 2021Twitter · reply@kristineCreates @robinhanson 1. Is why most people aren't interested in socialism- most of us like our consumer comforts.
