- Oct 6, 2021Twitter · reply@laprice @mattblaze Hahaha, but for those of us who *do* write BGP automation... Managers- takeaway is to trust your techies when they say they need an insane hardware budget to stand up a lab for proper testing.
- Oct 6, 2021Twitter · reply@QuinnyPig Local personal risk- if Dominion Power has an extended outage, the combined generator emissions would quickly result in unhealthy air quality for the region.
- Oct 6, 2021Twitter · reply@QuinnyPig Omg yes this 💯 ... who's the systemic risk regulator for internet infrastructure? Beyond us-east-1 if you look at a map of datacenters and exchanges.... I live here and would prefer not to be such a tempting target.

- Oct 6, 2021Twitter · repostRT @mattparlmer: Turning a bunch of grow lamps on in the morning during the winter has drastically improved my QoL
- Oct 6, 2021Twitter · reply@oldenoughtosay Both literally and culturally... Highland games are the best.
- Oct 5, 2021Twitter · reply@PatrickDFarley @sentientist To be clear I'm not an activist trying to ban research or individual decisions, but I think there's a valid but ignored POV that not every divergence from the norm is a "disease" to be eradicated from the gene pool.
- Oct 5, 2021Twitter · reply@PatrickDFarley @sentientist Going back to the original topic of neurodiversity, I just think it would be unfortunate if we eliminate genetic diversity rather than install color-tune dimmable lights to reinforce a normal circadian rhythm.
- Oct 5, 2021Twitter · reply@PatrickDFarley @sentientist But no I wouldn't want them to be diagnosed... Psychiatric diagnoses are still kinda BS because we don't understand the brain well enough yet.
- Oct 5, 2021Twitter · reply@PatrickDFarley @sentientist And having learned to live with it, the "symptoms" are triggered by specific environmental causes which can be avoided.
- Oct 5, 2021Twitter · reply@PatrickDFarley @sentientist I'd want them to inherit some of the genes yes. Obv the trait runs through my fam tree, but so does entrepreneurial success and wealth...
- Oct 5, 2021Twitter · reply@PatrickDFarley @sentientist It is correlated with more creativity and divergent thinking, both in patients and in their genetic relatives who may not have the problematic symptoms... Entrepreneurs are much more likely to have bipolar, as are great figures in history esp art and literature...
- Oct 5, 2021Twitter · reply@PatrickDFarley @sentientist Well, the second personal example gets more pushback, which is that I've been diagnosed with bipolar 2, which is pretty clearly a genetic disease, but on net I think it's more superpower than disability...
- Oct 5, 2021Twitter · reply@sentientist I'm probably overstating the evidence, but it makes sense- kids who love to read spend more time in the library and end up with worse eyes. I'd prefer to fix our vision problem by getting kids outside rather than by eliminating a gene that causes higher IQ aka neurodiversity.
- Oct 5, 2021Twitter · reply@sentientist Personal example- I'm nearsighted and it sucks, I wish I had 20/20 vision. But the gene they've correlated to poor vision is also correlated with higher intelligence... There's also research suggesting a major factor in nearsightedness is not enough time outdoors in childhood..
- Oct 5, 2021Twitter · reply@sentientist I think you're missing the point on neurodiversity, which is that some of these traits are only maladaptive in a particular environment and that the same genes that cause "illness" may still be a net benefit for society.
- Oct 5, 2021Twitter · reply@matthewstoller Wtf does "use algorithms" mean? Use code?
- Oct 5, 2021Twitter · reply@Bertie799 @sentientist To be fair, if your goal is to eliminate certain deafness-causing genes from the gene pool that is the literal definition of genocide. The question is whether that's a bad thing.
- Oct 5, 2021Twitter · reply@robinhanson @davmlaw "grabby" sounds like one of those octopus executives who won't keep their hands to themselves during (quasi-mandatory) happy hour. Imo grabby aliens sound pathetic and impotent.
- Oct 5, 2021Twitter · reply@razibkhan Is your point that we should cancel all the child-related benefits and subsidies so as to not "treat them like a burden" but let families do it on their own as they do in developing countries?
- Oct 5, 2021Twitter · reply@fordiman @HobbesTheVizsla @ErrataRob @C_C_Krebs Ehhh possibly didn't lose their job yet, they're still needed to finish cleaning up the mess and write down what happened for future reference.

- Oct 4, 2021Twitter · reply@sadalsvvd Lol, sounds painful to restore load balanced routers in each of their 15 data centers, which all must've received the bad config for the whole thing to fail as it did...
- Oct 4, 2021Twitter · quote@MalwareTechBlog @LainShot Interesting rumor that it's a self-ddos and intentional route change to stop the traffic... https://mobile.twitter.com/sadalsvvd/status/1445130687976198148
- Oct 4, 2021Twitter · reply@Amellal1490 @GossiTheDog Idk the root cause, but if it's just a bad BGP config there's no reason to think that would affect server data except maybe uncommitted changes left hanging as the network went down.
- Oct 4, 2021Twitter · reply@Amellal1490 @GossiTheDog Yes of course... It's like being without a map- everything is still there you just can't find it.

- Oct 4, 2021Twitter · reply@LainShot @MalwareTechBlog Ah I'm being intentionally obscure because I'd rather not attach my political views to my employer or clients... Didn't mean to provoke debate, was just pointing out that internal screw up and ddos attack aren't mutually exclusive stories.

- Oct 2, 2021Twitter · reply@cjereneta Hah, actually I appreciate that it's a higher bandwidth connection, reduces length of conversation to not need to verbally spell out "I know you have concerns and I respect your expertise so I'm very open to hearing why I'm wrong..."
- Oct 2, 2021Twitter · reply@cjereneta I do try to use as much time as possible on the crux of the matter, but on calls with 20+ people who are all more senior and higher-status I'm not going to get more than 30s to try to seed an idea and shift the conversation in a more productive direction.
- Oct 2, 2021Twitter · reply@cjereneta I do use "engaged" and "open" body language when making these suggestions- leaning in, head tilted, slightly smiling countenance, eye contact showing concern for the reaction of the most frustrated / likely objectors, usually holding a pen to take down notes when they reply...
- Oct 2, 2021Twitter · reply@cjereneta This is why previously I've seen "could we just" as a phrase that would add 10s to the clock because people like simplifications when they're frustrated with complexity.
- Oct 2, 2021Twitter · reply@cjereneta Hm, that second one is awfully wordy... In established groups I could use it, after gaining credibility that I'm worth hearing out despite low hierarchical status.. in new groups I feel there's a "shot clock" for us geeks to make a point that resonates with a leader.
- Oct 2, 2021Twitter · reply@cjereneta I mean, I'm quite shy, I hate speaking up in meetings but when I wait and try to work it one on one after the meeting breaks up in frustration I get severely scolded for not saying something sooner
- Oct 2, 2021Twitter · reply@cjereneta And I do require a higher confidence threshold for "dumb" suggestions... But as dev lead I'm usually the person who is responsible for answering the question on what's the least difficult to build
- Oct 2, 2021Twitter · reply@cjereneta I do often say "what if we just..." but that still uses the problematic word "just"..?
- Oct 2, 2021Twitter · reply@cjereneta Do you have any suggestions to use instead? ASD gives me more intuition for systems than social interactions...
- Oct 2, 2021Twitter · reply@cjereneta My "couldn't we just" suggestions are often adopted, and other times elicit a clarifying objection, but still usually seem to relieve tension in the room to find a way ahead... 🤔 Is it problematic to propose simpler solutions, or just to use that phrase to introduce them?
- Oct 2, 2021Twitter · reply@cjereneta Huh. This is a phrase I sometimes use as a lead-in to a simplifying suggestion... How else would you imply that what you're about to say is *intentionally* stepping back from the snarl of complexity to suggest another avenue to get at the client's goal?
