  1. Jul 16, 2021Twitter · reply@nudrinfe @QiaochuYuan Hm.... Do you think this is most of America or just a trendy sentiment among the 1% on Twitter? In my offline life I'm pretty open about my family's money and have never felt any negativity about it.
  2. Jul 16, 2021Twitter · reply@yeetgenstein @QiaochuYuan Yeah I'm genuinely curious... Is it a particular region or subculture? While my Appalachian/Upper Midwest ancestry is opposed to making a big show of consumption/ luxury, they consider thrift, investing, and innovating to be virtuous and deserving of quietly held wealth.
  3. Jul 16, 2021Twitter · reply@QiaochuYuan Wait wait ... You're saying it is American culture to feel vaguely bad about having money?!?
  4. Jul 16, 2021Twitter · reply@RationalEtienne @etherkragg @elonmusk We're displacing all non-domesticated mammals on Earth, this does bother me (hence vegan + no kids). I like my black bear neighbors more than many humans... https://t.co/t4ex1wB5LR

  6. Jul 16, 2021Twitter · reply@paulg By that logic one should drop out of an Ivy CS program? All love to my dropout tribe!
  7. Jul 16, 2021Twitter · reply@QiaochuYuan But as the mailings have ramped up the last few years, I am really starting to identify as "heartless Scrooge horrible human being" but I'm like resigned to it because idk what else to do- I don't want to encourage wasting money on mailings by responding
  8. Jul 16, 2021Twitter · reply@QiaochuYuan But I didn't ask to be contacted and emotionally I can't expose myself to a stack of heartbreak each day when I get home from work... It would send me back into hopeless depression, which is not productive for anyone.
  9. Jul 16, 2021Twitter · reply@QiaochuYuan I completely relate to feeling lost wrt charitable donations. My junk mail is 80% charities asking for money, because I've donated to a lot of causes over the years. It is low-key upsetting to dump all the heartbreaking stories in the trash without reading...
  10. Jul 16, 2021Twitter · quoteFunny ending- author's theory is that the "seed scare" was actually legitimate orders people placed and forgot when they were delayed in the early days of the pandemic. https://x.com/JeffreyGoldberg/status/1415892268238659586
  11. Jul 16, 2021Twitter · reply@QiaochuYuan I think it's important to be open and clear about the privileges of family wealth... There's too much shame and secrecy around money, people can't see how their circumstances compare and then feel hopeless when a colleague mysteriously spends far beyond their salary.
  12. Jul 16, 2021Twitter · reply@QiaochuYuan Anyway, I had 250K windfall a few yrs ago because family sold off an asset and everyone received a share of the profit... But it wasn't life-changing, just slotted into existing financial plans- not much emotion except some vague gratitude and stress about tax complications.
  13. Jul 16, 2021Twitter · reply@QiaochuYuan Oh, except they did finance my house- I put 25% down from my savings, they loaned me the other 75% as a mortgage which I've been repaying on schedule, but at a better-than-market rate with zero lender fees.
  14. Jul 16, 2021Twitter · reply@QiaochuYuan They set me up for success by paying for a reliable car and college education, and by paying me for part time work in my teens... But then didn't give me any significant cash until my 30s.
  15. Jul 16, 2021Twitter · reply@QiaochuYuan I think it's interesting and appreciate the honesty- my family has some wealth but raised me quite differently with a big emphasis on hard work, starting with menial labor at family businesses and a clear message that I should support myself by 21.
  16. Jul 15, 2021Twitter · reply@Treehouseriots @the_wilderless I took it to mean the money would have a non-trivial impact on my financial decisions... So I chose the first number larger than my current cash savings, which was 500K.
  17. Jul 15, 2021Twitter · reply@redactebdarry @BlckCatBlckSky @androme_duh Thank you for pointing this out... I thought I'd done something wrong and was like blocked by him.

  28. Jul 14, 2021Twitter · reply@matt2791117270 @teslaownersSV @elonmusk Ummm.. I'd probably feel the same way if I wasn't female, but the thought of 6 times through the pregnancy / nursing cycle, with all the pressure to retain a thin-fit youthful appearance, and also keep my career on track.... A data center isn't a child-friendly employer.

  33. Jul 14, 2021Twitter · reply@chatbot2048 @saintburns @Ilana_Who_ @RookTheBird I learned you had to set expectations low with a few deliberate wrong answers so you could slowly turn over a new leaf and by the end of the class be the teacher's favorite because they foolishly believed their teaching had improved your performance. 😏
  34. Jul 14, 2021Twitter · reply@lucian_phoenix @Ilana_Who_ Yes 💯 but subtly adversarial teacher relations were a good practical intro to social engineering... So career skills in the end?
  35. Jul 14, 2021Twitter · reply@Jezzer_UK @warrenhwdsb @Ilana_Who_ Otoh, once I caught on I calibrated my troublemaking so the teacher would call on me to embarrass me, only I always had the right answer so she never got the satisfaction. Also did my homework immediately so the rest of the class could copy my answers before the next session.
  36. Jul 14, 2021Twitter · reply@Ilana_Who_ I was banished to sit in the hallway during math sessions after filling out the whole workbook in the first month of school. Naively I thought we were *supposed* to learn the contents of the books, rather than learn to play dumb to prop up teacher's ego. Silly ASD.
  37. Jul 14, 2021Twitter · reply@Ilana_Who_ Yep... math profs grew to rely on my interruptions to correct mistakes before they propagated across the whiteboard. One day I came to class woozy from cold + benadryl, prof kept looking at me with growing concern because I wasn't nodding along as per usual.

  44. Jul 13, 2021Twitter · reply@M_Millerman A surprising percentage of historical leaders and creative geniuses seem to have been bipolar... Are we losing something as a society by pushing mood stabilizers as the first line of treatment for mostly-functional adults with mild hypomania?
  45. Jul 13, 2021Twitter · reply@zebulgar If Starlink fulfills its promise of providing high speed internet to anyone anywhere in the world for under $100 / mo, I have to think the connectivity is even more valuable than the STEM human capital spawned from SpaceX directly.

  48. Jul 13, 2021Twitter · reply@M_Millerman Parental attitudes wrt sports vs academics- insisting on travel teams and expensive private coaching for sports while opposing tracking and acceleration for STEM because it is "unfair" and "kids need to learn how to get along with less capable peers"
  49. Jul 13, 2021Twitter · reply@M_Millerman The fact that there are some positive effects of climate change... Vastly outweighed by the negatives on a global basis, but for example farm yields in some places are projected to increase due to the longer growing season...
  50. Jul 13, 2021Twitter · reply@M_Millerman Negative respiratory effects of fireworks smoke. Assisted suicide for terminal patients. Inadequate vegetable consumption causing widespread sub-clinical chronic gastrointestinal complaints. That poor parenting can't be fully reversed by even the best teachers.
  51. Jul 13, 2021Twitter · reply@TaylorLorenz Yes, though I'm back to in-person and so much happier. Meetings are *so* much shorter when I can use a whiteboard and read nonverbal communication, and when everyone isn't distracted with pets and kids and doorbells and lawn mowers.

  56. Jul 13, 2021Twitter · reply@lil_schmutzy @cdw2468 @elonmusk Within my lifetime I think the blue planet lifestyle > the red planet lifestyle... It's like cheering on Olympians from my couch- vicariously enjoy the spectacle without having to go through all the hardship to get there myself.
  57. Jul 13, 2021Twitter · reply@waitbutwhy When you say "blue pill" you mean Viagra, right?
  58. Jul 13, 2021Twitter · reply@cdw2468 @BitcoinBRog @elonmusk Yes, but at *significantly* greater risk with *significantly* less creature comforts than if you invested the same amount of money to build a private island fortress on Earth.
  59. Jul 13, 2021Twitter · reply@cdw2468 @elonmusk So Bezos and Branson are the brave few? Hopefully someday it is as safe and comfy as you describe, but that isn't the reality facing current billionaire adventurers, so I highly doubt their personal goal is to avoid the discomfort of climate change.
  60. Jul 13, 2021Twitter · reply@NelNelNellie @cdw2468 @elonmusk Sure, I'm more interested in Mars... But a diverse space economy will be more resilient than the dysfunctional process of congressional appropriations.
  61. Jul 12, 2021Twitter · reply@cdw2468 @elonmusk "getting out of dodge" is a ridiculous take, if you think about it for 5 seconds ... Space / Mars is a far more hostile environment than anthropocene Earth, and taking a ride on the first human flight of a new system is not exactly a life-prolonging choice.
