@QiaochuYuan I think it's interesting and appreciate the honesty- my family has some wealth but raised me quite differently with a big emphasis on hard work, starting with menial labor at family businesses and a clear message that I should support myself by 21.

@QiaochuYuan They set me up for success by paying for a reliable car and college education, and by paying me for part time work in my teens... But then didn't give me any significant cash until my 30s.

@QiaochuYuan Oh, except they did finance my house- I put 25% down from my savings, they loaned me the other 75% as a mortgage which I've been repaying on schedule, but at a better-than-market rate with zero lender fees.

@QiaochuYuan Anyway, I had 250K windfall a few yrs ago because family sold off an asset and everyone received a share of the profit... But it wasn't life-changing, just slotted into existing financial plans- not much emotion except some vague gratitude and stress about tax complications.

@QiaochuYuan I think it's important to be open and clear about the privileges of family wealth... There's too much shame and secrecy around money, people can't see how their circumstances compare and then feel hopeless when a colleague mysteriously spends far beyond their salary.
