follow your genuine curiosity, get more comfy in the space near the edges of your knowledge rather than the stuff you know well try to relate new concepts with your existing knowledge, this often generates questions when it doesn't quite seem to fit consider the distribution of possible answers from your audience- some truly interesting & important questions are unlikely to generate good answers because no one knows and we've accumulated stock memes to dodge the difficulty

use the vocabulary of the person you're talking to as much as you can- imperfect synonyms can derail into a discussion of definitions and frames use straightforward grammar constructs and avoid double negatives, use nouns & names more often than you think you should- too many pronouns can get confusing provide a bit of context or your motivation for asking if the question is unconventional or admits multiple interpretations- help the answerer know what you're looking for

not all questions are about seeking information for yourself- be aware of the range of motivations and adjust accordingly.... you might be questioning to get commitment to a decision, to gently correct an error, seeking information on behalf of other listeners, to lob the conversational ball back to the speaker / guide their chatter towards a topic of interest, to show support or to show dissent, perhaps a humorous question meant to get a laugh not an answer, perhaps a question to demonstrate your knowledge or sympathy...
