Set three centuries after the events of the Mistborn trilogy, this novel finds the world of Scadrial on the cusp of the industrial age, with railroads, electric lights, and steel-framed skyscrapers rising in the city of Elendel. The narrative follows Waxillium Ladrian, a former lawman turned private investigator, as he is recruited to investigate the mythical Bands of Mourning—legendary metal minds said to grant the powers of the ancient Lord Ruler. His quest leads him to the southern city of New Seran, where he uncovers clues about his uncle’s true intentions and the secretive organization known as The Set.

Sanderson blends the procedural structure of a detective story with the high-stakes magic system of the Mistborn universe. The prose is accessible and plot-driven, balancing action sequences with character-driven dialogue and the intricate political machinations of a society transitioning from feudalism to modernity. The story explores themes of legacy, the ethics of power, and the tension between tradition and progress, all while maintaining the series' signature focus on logical magic rules and strategic combat.
