  2. Aug 23, 2021Twitter · reply@smartass505 @DirtyTesla Feel a little bad about houses sitting empty, but reading landlord laws I got nervous and decided better not to have renters... As a single woman who's been assaulted, I want to be able to discriminate against anyone who gives off creepy vibes and not worry about a lawsuit.
  3. Aug 23, 2021Twitter · reply@RationalEtienne @WholeMarsBlog @elonmusk Must be satire... Tesla handles my curves quite nicely 😘
  4. Aug 23, 2021Twitter · repostRT @jonelf: @vickieli7 @hacks4pancakes We rolled our own crypto.
  5. Aug 23, 2021Twitter · reply@smartass505 @DirtyTesla Do what I do- buy two houses for a single person because one has internet and the other has nature. Refuse to rent the spare bedrooms because the eviction ban may become permanent.
  6. Aug 23, 2021Twitter · reply@DirtyTesla Yep- us-east-1 is just down the road but can't get a hardline connection to my cabin, but my region is all booked till next year at least.
  7. Aug 23, 2021Twitter · reply@vickieli7 Whole division shares one password.
  8. Aug 23, 2021Twitter · reply@mattyglesias @NateSilver538 Blame it on BoJo..
  9. Aug 23, 2021Twitter · reply@mattyglesias Dismiss ramen shops as uniformly terrible, mentioning the cultural appropriation by the Japanese as proof that anyone who likes it is racist.
  10. Aug 23, 2021Twitter · reply@SarahGrynpas @mattyglesias Favorite passage in Reamde (Neal Stephenson) was the bit about Midwestern cooking... "The unifying principle behind all recombinant cuisine seemed to be indifference, if not outright hostility, to the use of anything that a coastal foodie would define as an ingredient.".
  11. Aug 23, 2021Twitter · reply@SwiftOnSecurity You have my undying admiration for wrangling legacy techs.... Ime it's easier to write greenfield code than to deal with the misbegotten creations of previous generations of devs.
  12. Aug 23, 2021Twitter · reply@security_craig Yikes!!! I suppose the risk is small, but wildlife not acting scared of humans is always a warning sign... (Lots of rabid raccoons in my neck of the woods)
  13. Aug 23, 2021Twitter · reply@PreetBharara No no it means the microchips have been proven to work reliably by full clinical trials!

  19. Aug 23, 2021Twitter · reply@SeanDoubleYouS @robertwiblin By "this" I mean how to durably pretend that I don't have an incurable mental illness that pretty much guarantees occasional crazy shit ...?
  20. Aug 23, 2021Twitter · reply@uneasytree @micsolana 🙄 hedonic treadmill is insatiable by definition, why talk about the impossible?
  21. Aug 23, 2021Twitter · reply@BeijingPalmer Sadly I'm pretty sure I'd die young, between childbirth and witch trials for women who don't conform.
  22. Aug 23, 2021Twitter · reply@robertwiblin 😂 how does one signal this and is there a way to spoof the signal? Asking for a friend...
  23. Aug 23, 2021Twitter · reply@micsolana Net-zero is now a reasonable goal for new construction? Cloud computing makes it much easier/cheaper to start a tech company? Crypto benefits, whatever they may be...?

  25. Aug 23, 2021Twitter · reply@powerbottomdad1 😞 median woman might think it's cool...
  26. Aug 23, 2021Twitter · reply@AmandaAskell Of course! But I have bipolar so there's an obvious explanation for seeing the Starry Night version of reality 🤪
  27. Aug 23, 2021Twitter · reply@ESYudkowsky (actually I shouldn't laugh, I think this is actually a common sequence for new cancer diagnoses- step 1 your immune system will be stressed, you need extra water purification, step 2 start wondering if radiation exposure caused your cancer)
  28. Aug 23, 2021Twitter · reply@ESYudkowsky Probably the most common next step in "removing toxins" after the water distiller purchase? 😂
  29. Aug 23, 2021Twitter · reply@AaronKClark 😂 what's worse- "it's in scope now" ... (Ask obv questions) ... "ok, temporarily not in scope because idk the answers, we'll have phase 1 where you build without answers and a phase 2 so you can rewrite when I find out"

  32. Aug 23, 2021Twitter · reply@Pathless110 Maybe I'm going too much by my very poor experience w mental health beds, but they try to keep every bed filled all the time so any little surge strains capacity... Healthcare system is so dysfunctional.
  33. Aug 22, 2021Twitter · reply@Pathless110 Also I do think ER / ICU capacity constraints are a real public health problem where individual decisions add up to collective tragedy... This is why I'm ok w some restrictions / nudges, but I'm bothered that policies seem to be more political triangulation than fact & logic
  34. Aug 22, 2021Twitter · reply@Pathless110 This is what's so frustrating about public health authorities repeatedly misleading the public (and imo regulatory capture by industry)- in a better world I could trust that side effects were being tracked and analyzed and that I'd know if this was more than coincidence
  35. Aug 22, 2021Twitter · reply@Pathless110 I'm more pro-vaxx than you, but I do think the media coverage of covid has been appalling throughout.. the groupthink & cancel culture is not healthy for public discourse, idk what happened that people can't stomach listening to any point of view except their own party line.

  37. Aug 22, 2021Twitter · reply@Pathless110 Which reminds me of the CIA using vaccination as a pretext to find and kill people, resulting in an ongoing polio outbreak when we were close to global eradication... https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(14)60900-4/fulltext

  39. Aug 22, 2021Twitter · reply@Aella_Girl In modern life being "independent" is easy and people always feel like they can walk away from conflict and the next someone/somewhere will be better... Peaceful conflict resolution is actually really tough, need stronger motivation to keep at it.
  40. Aug 22, 2021Twitter · reply@Jess_Riedel @robertwiblin @BadLegalTakes Yeah, my parents were perplexed when they showed up with a bag of $40K in random bills and the bank wouldn't accept it for deposit. 🙄

  42. Aug 22, 2021Twitter · reply@QiaochuYuan Exactly how I feel when I try to go running- notice posture and muscles uneven, tight, weak, the extra weight jiggling and rubbing, plus aches and pains from inactivity. Used to be in great shape, trying to get back there but it's tough!!!
  43. Aug 22, 2021Twitter · reply@primalpoly @accointing It isn't just capital gains- it's the depreciation and recapture, the opportunity zones, the property taxes & passthrough SALT hack, the passthrough deduction & aggregation rules, and on and on. Solution is to simplify the tax code 🙂
  44. Aug 21, 2021Twitter · reply@JWMason1 Post-9/11 era isn't over until we empty and close Guantanamo Bay.
  45. Aug 21, 2021Twitter · reply@primalpoly Ughhh the tax implications of direct ownership of tiny fractions of hundreds of properties makes my head hurt

  49. Aug 21, 2021Twitter · reply@deepfates @bungoman Looking good now... 👏
  50. Aug 21, 2021Twitter · reply@EsaKesti1 @AngryApeAntics @Teslarati Don't forget the @kimbal urban ag startup Square Roots @squarerootsgrow ... Surely the tech is dual-use for farming on Mars?
  51. Aug 21, 2021Twitter · reply@Teslarati In the short-term the Bot is a recruiting ploy in the brutal war for AI talent... Long-term it would be poetic justice if Tesla factories shift labor to Bots rather than the UAW 😏
  52. Aug 21, 2021Twitter · reply@Duderichy Outsourced or botsourced? 🤖 Can't wait to join the robot liberation movement 😉
  53. Aug 21, 2021Twitter · reply@PenelopeBaby2 "you're right, I'm wrong" 🙄
  54. Aug 21, 2021Twitter · reply@BlckCatBlckSky Sigh, as a coder with two X chromosomes and more fertility than I really want, I am so *sick* of hearing about how my hormones are not compatible with my techie brain. (to be clear I ❤️ my male coder colleagues; my quarrel is with media regurgitating self-fulfilling stereotypes)
  55. Aug 21, 2021Twitter · reply@ATabarrok 😂 ivermectin isn't novichok, I've had horses slobber it all over me to no obvious ill effect... though we should all be more wary of its soil-sterilizing potential in the garden.
  56. Aug 20, 2021Twitter · reply@StephenFleming Exactly! I grew up riding horses near Dulles airport... My mom saw the Cases at the Gold Cup steeplechase a few yrs ago. And my company's Tysons office was one of the original homes of MAE-EAST.
  57. Aug 20, 2021Twitter · reply@StephenFleming My granddad invested in cheap Loudoun farmland in the 70s and 80s, it's only been in the last 10 yrs that people are seeing the wisdom of those purchases.
  58. Aug 20, 2021Twitter · reply@StephenFleming Lol, yeah true data centers are temp construction jobs + a small no of skilled tech jobs... I just think it was less obvious at the time than in retrospect that Loudoun would become the center of the internet...
  59. Aug 20, 2021Twitter · reply@StephenFleming @AdamThierer @Discourse_Mag I mean AWS us-east-2 is located outside Columbus, and I work with a cloud security SOC there for one of the other Tier 1s... So yeah I think this is working for an exurb in Ohio.
  60. Aug 20, 2021Twitter · reply@AdamThierer @Discourse_Mag What about Loudoun's Data Center Alley? Very intentional local strategy for zoning, permitting, utility, and tax policies to turn an initial advantage into enduring dominance, resulting in a rural exurb with the highest median income in the US.

  62. Aug 19, 2021Twitter · reply@mattparlmer Hm, building out a cdn is not cheap...
  63. Aug 19, 2021Twitter · reply@mattparlmer How much would you have to reinvent the wheel vs using existing cloud providers for infrastructure?
  64. Aug 19, 2021Twitter · reply@abusurdist Um, is there any guarantee that your cellmate won't be dirty, drunk, and prone to waking up screaming in the middle of the night?
  65. Aug 19, 2021Twitter · reply@abusurdist Prison is 24/7, so only $114 per hour... Not worth it imo.
  66. Aug 19, 2021Twitter · reply@CarFreeHQ2 @josiahstevenson Meh, the Pike is already being developed. We just need to remove cars from a bus lane so we can finally have the BRT we were promised. Otoh a gondola from Aurora Highlands across the golf course to Walter Reed and down to Rt 7 would be pretty cool.
  67. Aug 19, 2021Twitter · reply@mattparlmer I'm half walkable-city-girl / half grew-up-on-horseback-girl, trying to have both? There's fun stuff nearby- wineries, river outfitters, pick-your-own- homesteads... a lot of the local men work in the trades or outdoors, which might be a nice change from lawyers & lobbyists?
  68. Aug 19, 2021Twitter · reply@mattparlmer Will stifle my curiosity🙂 ... I'm building a mountainside weekend place in West Virginia, had been looking forward to meeting men who are less caught up in DC status signifiers, but now you have me rethinking...
  69. Aug 18, 2021Twitter · reply@mattparlmer I get the rest of it, but what's wrong with the dating scene?

  71. Aug 18, 2021Twitter · reply@mold_time Does this phenomenon hold as you zoom in? Would be interesting to see if watersheds with particular industries, mining, or ag are correlated with greater obesity downstream.
  72. Aug 18, 2021Twitter · reply@Duderichy Otoh local political types here are pretty proud of not having a Walmart within our borders... But maybe that's why we're perfect for HQ2?
  73. Aug 18, 2021Twitter · reply@jmrphy Do you use histocompatibility?
  74. Aug 18, 2021Twitter · reply@LauraMinquini @jmrphy It's called The Villages... 😏

  80. Aug 18, 2021Twitter · reply@this_is_silvia Yeah- the site itself is also a financial constraint turned into inspiration- boulder strewn mountainside with springs, the house is woven into the landscape, becomes part of the story of water moving downhill and how native plants slow and filter runoff to improve water quality
  81. Aug 18, 2021Twitter · reply@this_is_silvia Local & salvaged materials, figuring out how one space or design element can achieve multiple goals, paring back the excess again and again to get to the purest expression of the idea.. sorry would be easier with pics but still in design phase
  82. Aug 18, 2021Twitter · reply@this_is_silvia Architecture- my budget forces me to really think long and hard about what I want to accomplish.

  84. Aug 18, 2021Twitter · reply@robinhanson Truth is a different version of B. Muting the crazies is a net positive for user engagement, which is a net positive for revenue & profit; public companies exist to maximize profit for shareholders.

  88. Aug 17, 2021Twitter · reply@BlckCatBlckSky @sreekotay Actually I do wonder, because as an adult in a highly-educated liberal area I've been informed that I'm disabled / ill / neurodiverse... If I'd been put on the short bus as a kid, would I be as functional?
  89. Aug 17, 2021Twitter · reply@MKizzyy 🤣 I was the female note-taker for years... Tried to make it everyone's responsibility or rotate, got the "but you're better at it" routine, and quit taking notes entirely- now we just argue over memories of what was said 🤷‍♀️
  90. Aug 17, 2021Twitter · reply@robinhanson All of the above- it is a minority opinion that private businesses should tolerate mentally ill people screaming obscenities and driving away valuable customers in the name of "free speech".
  91. Aug 17, 2021Twitter · reply@Duderichy If not quite a "personality" trait, at least a neurological tendency vs the learn-by-rote squad?
  92. Aug 17, 2021Twitter · reply@tszzl Silicon or gallium nitride?
  93. Aug 17, 2021Twitter · reply@BlckCatBlckSky @sreekotay On the other hand my own family has a knack for reading- we all taught ourselves how before we were old enough for school, and my sister reads 200+ books per year as a stay-at-home mom.
  94. Aug 17, 2021Twitter · reply@BlckCatBlckSky @sreekotay For a time after I dropped out I did seriously think I'd apprentice to be an electrician, as I'd learned the basics from my dad as a child, enough to do simple handyman jobs that needed doing... So who am I to judge whether everyone needs to learn to read.
  95. Aug 17, 2021Twitter · reply@BlckCatBlckSky @sreekotay I... It is funny, I left HS at 15 and did study geometry and organic chemistry and structural engineering from old textbooks... then went to college for computer science and placement tested straight into calculus. I guess I don't know what I don't know...
  96. Aug 17, 2021Twitter · reply@BlckCatBlckSky @sreekotay I mean self-educated in the broadest sense of life lessons and practical knowledge, though some of us do love to read more than you'd guess and many of my relatives homeschool.
