- Sep 1, 2021Twitter · reply@PareeDave @wmui1 @David_Charts @mattyglesias Also valuation is tough- for example, sale in progress- book value is 98K, tax assessed value is 792K, sale price is 4.3M, assuming it doesn't fall through... which value are you taxing?
- Sep 1, 2021Twitter · reply@PareeDave @wmui1 @David_Charts @mattyglesias I don't have debt/leverage so how are assets different than net worth? And I wouldn't fuss except they've explicitly said they wouldn't index to inflation because they want it to hit more taxpayers over time.
- Sep 1, 2021Twitter · reply@dansully230 @PareeDave @wmui1 @David_Charts @mattyglesias My actual take-home income is 5-figures, the rest is locked in a limited partnership that has income on paper but doesn't distribute except a ballpark figure to cover the extra taxes (and sometimes less than that, months after the tax is due).
- Sep 1, 2021Twitter · reply@PareeDave @wmui1 @David_Charts @mattyglesias ($500K * 60 yrs at 8% annual return = $50M)
- Sep 1, 2021Twitter · reply@PareeDave @wmui1 @David_Charts @mattyglesias Not over 50 million, but give inflation a few year... I certainly expect to get there in my lifetime and I'd rather not have a repeat of AMT ("it's only for the rich" -> hits people with upper middle income)
- Sep 1, 2021Twitter · reply@wmui1 @David_Charts @mattyglesias Not if you're in the process of selling it. I'm somewhere in the middle on tax policy- the details matter and individual taxpayers don't always appreciate the workflow issues in the current system.
- Sep 1, 2021Twitter · reply@David_Charts @mattyglesias (currently in the process of selling a small parcel of farmland for datacenter development, offer accepted in March, sale will close in Nov, even though the buyer is in a hurry to build)
- Sep 1, 2021Twitter · reply@David_Charts @mattyglesias It really is not that simple to sell land- takes several months to close even for the most urgent acquisition of commerical raw land with no unusual circumstances... Add to that the small pool of potential buyers and fluctuating business cycle, can take several years to sell.
- Sep 1, 2021Twitter · reply@0x26d Aww, give her time she'll settle in... Mine hid under the bed for a month, now rules the roost
- Sep 1, 2021Twitter · reply@asyncangel @bryanl Relatedly, the idea that it's just as efficient to task two devs half time on two projects for two different clients as it is to dedicate one dev to each client
- Sep 1, 2021Twitter · reply@asyncangel @bryanl I love the "no progress!?! But you've had two days!!!" when I've been booked with interviews and code reviews and client meetings and "sync ups" with no gap more than 30 mins. Some tasks require uninterrupted time to think....
- Sep 1, 2021Twitter · reply@bryanl Lines of Code seen as an asset rather than a liability by PMs (and corresponding "just start coding!!! we can straighten out reqs later" attitude)

- Sep 1, 2021Twitter · reply@telmudic Ha! and here I've been keeping it a deep dark secret
- Sep 1, 2021Twitter · reply@bryan_caplan 🙄 the important point is to shift from "I didn't hear her say no so I kept going" (because she was passed out) to "she affirmatively said yes", with the caveat that you can't hold a gun to her head to coerce a "yes". As someone with ASD I don't think this standard is unfair.
