  1. Jun 29, 2021Twitter · reply@mattparlmer Yeah, I'm most interested in NYC because we're likely shifting to RCV in near future... would prefer not to embarrass myself by screwing up the unofficial results. But tbh I voted for all incumbents on the 8th- just as complacently contented as my neighbors.
  2. Jun 29, 2021Twitter · reply@mattparlmer Depends what you mean by recently- blue every presidential since Mondale
  3. Jun 29, 2021Twitter · reply@mattparlmer Ok, I just figured Arlington is a dense urban heavily Dem locale where the primaries are competitive and the general a foregone conclusion...
  4. Jun 29, 2021Twitter · reply@mattparlmer Each precinct closes voting with candidate representatives watching the process and recording copies of the results for the precinct so they can't be massaged in the central office... So you'd have to commit fraud physically within each precinct...
  5. Jun 29, 2021Twitter · reply@mattparlmer I work elections in Arlington VA and your description doesn't match my experience ...
  6. Jun 29, 2021Twitter · quoteI've met some veterans of the FAA AAS fiasco... their horror stories almost scared me off my CS degree & software eng career😛 https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1409951549988782087

  9. Jun 29, 2021Twitter · reply@coldlawgic To be fair everyone has a "lived experience" ... ask them about tax law and the SEC rather than hypothetical poor-people crimes.

  11. Jun 29, 2021Twitter · reply@rinkisethi Once missed a meeting in a SOC because the security guard wouldn't call down an escort because he was convinced I was in the wrong building and "marketing is next door"
  12. Jun 29, 2021Twitter · reply@rinkisethi 🤣 I had a (male) designer tell me that an infosec client was mistaken to add purple to their color palette because "purple is a girl's color"
  13. Jun 29, 2021Twitter · reply@robinhanson (note that the alignment doesn't entirely extend to salary negotiations, similar to real estate agents- they want closed deals for lowest labor invested, actual salary is secondary)
  14. Jun 29, 2021Twitter · reply@robinhanson Headhunters have useful insights and aligned incentives for getting you hired... Guidance counselors are net-negative.
  15. Jun 29, 2021Twitter · reply@deepfates 🔥🔥🔥👏
  16. Jun 29, 2021Twitter · reply@robinhanson But seriously I now see the master plan and it is genius if your goal is to end the education system as we know it. As a Thiel-fangirl I'm down.

  21. Jun 29, 2021Twitter · reply@robinhanson Yes and yes 🙂
  22. Jun 29, 2021Twitter · reply@robinhanson Ok, the objection to this scheme on tax revenue grounds is that it creates new avenues of tax avoidance (assuming everything else about the tax code remains the same) ... a pattern of successful tax avoidance would harm birth-tax revenue.
  23. Jun 29, 2021Twitter · reply@robinhanson My objection is that there is a large scope for abuse in our current society / human nature, so I think creating this incentive would result in additional abusive behavior. And I don't trust democracy would retain this "no power" principle once agents have reason to change it
  24. Jun 29, 2021Twitter · reply@robinhanson No, I'm assuming there's a market and you can buy / sell across the tax-debtor's lifetime.
  25. Jun 29, 2021Twitter · reply@robinhanson (assuming any parents with a highly talented child would be the first to know and would buy up their child's tax-debt to take advantage of the info asymmetry)
  26. Jun 29, 2021Twitter · reply@robinhanson There are many people who's earning potential exceeds their interest in becoming wealthy... Wouldn't they treat their agent like a medical debt collector (i.e. ignore them till they give up and go away)? What if the agent becomes abusive to coerce more work, a la Britney?
  27. Jun 29, 2021Twitter · repostRT @FastCompany: The quest for rare wood is endangering forests. Now we can just 3d-print replicas made from wood waste instead. https://t.…
  28. Jun 29, 2021Twitter · reply@Orbitron121 @AlishaGrauso @JoshuaPotash @bravenewfilms The climate on Mars is still much less hospitable than the worst climate change forecasts. Otoh hell is other people, so private islands and seasteading are looking more and more attractive.
  29. Jun 29, 2021Twitter · quoteSuch a perfect description of the impact of great writing 💕 https://x.com/brimmingvessel/status/1409743318985052164
  30. Jun 29, 2021Twitter · reply@Alienated53 @debra25579548 @JoshuaPotash @bresla_linda All of the "elites" I've known have given up on politics and media as no-win toxicity... Instead they run their private companies as mini-fiefdoms and vote libertarian to minimize the power of politicians.
  31. Jun 29, 2021Twitter · reply@CthulhuHulu @JoshuaPotash Several countries have the capability, but like nuclear weapons if anyone starts shooting it'll be a satellite free-for-all and then cascading collisions and debris; inevitably the poor and sick will suffer the most from destruction of space infrastructure
  32. Jun 29, 2021Twitter · reply@Zohar_shining @RFlaherty46 @jcinthelibrary When you're voted "least likeable CEO in tech" ... But also no one has figured out what to do with Yahoo's digital real estate other than run ads (which is not a growth story).

  35. Jun 29, 2021Twitter · reply@RationalEtienne So true- people tease me for being an Elon fan, but he's a visionary engineer who's done more than anyone to fight climate change and he's a huge inspiration for all of us neurodiverse folks to be ourselves and shoot for the stars even if we're misunderstood along the way.

  41. Jun 27, 2021Twitter · reply@blackgirlshack @InfoSecSherpa Thanks for the reply, helps clarify that I'm probably not qualified- don't have any of the certs or deep knowledge of the various regulations / industry best practices, just happen to build network security tools.

  44. Jun 27, 2021Twitter · reply@BlckCatBlckSky Depends... RBG's headstone is sacred, not to be defiled.
  45. Jun 27, 2021Twitter · reply@BlckCatBlckSky @RocketHart Size of negative externality depends on the person tho ... And imo it would be a positive externality if the rich person is female.

  53. Jun 25, 2021Twitter · reply@kmele Increasing economic opportunity in high crime areas and decreasing the odds of being falsely accused or harassed while innocent are also important- anything to increase the gap between expected value of breaking the law vs expected value of abiding by it...
  54. Jun 25, 2021Twitter · reply@kmele For premeditated crimes where threat of punishment is a deterrent, increasing the odds of getting caught allows us to decrease the severity of the punishment while maintaining the deterrent effect... This is why I do support funding a highly disciplined & effective police force
  55. Jun 25, 2021Twitter · reply@BlckCatBlckSky I mean, prenup? What scenario + alternative definition of "consensual" requires legal enforcement not available via our current system of private contracts?
  56. Jun 25, 2021Twitter · reply@BlckCatBlckSky If it is truly consensual you don't need a legal system to enforce your ownership, and bdsm ppl sign non-legally-binding slave contracts all the time, so I'm not sure what you're looking to change about the status quo?

Or use a version of Eth to create a market for resources among the Mars rovers exploring and mining resources in advance of human arrival... Enable specialization by selling comms / water / images among various missions?
  66. Jun 25, 2021Twitter · reply@RationalEtienne @elonmusk Eh, memes and dogs are a way to blow off steam, the crypto and econ is intellectually interesting, it will probably turn into something useful in the future (just not in the way the stonks guys believe)...
