  21. Jun 24, 2021Twitter · reply@gbrl_dick Womenfolk cluster near the food to compare potato salad recipes (the secret is always more mayo) and tsk resignedly about the fireworks they know full well Bubba has hidden in the truck... Mix with hollering at their man to put on a hat or at the kids as they trample the flowers
  22. Jun 24, 2021Twitter · reply@gbrl_dick Menfolk stand the grill with their beer, enjoying the god-given freedom to refuse sunscreen and anticipating the "real show" of illegal firecrackers Bubba smuggled in from south of the border, while repeatedly sizing up the overhanging trees where they plan to light them offff
  23. Jun 24, 2021Twitter · reply@gbrl_dick For bonus points arm the kids with a plastic bag of plastic water balloons and set up several sprinklers "for the kids to play" (then blithely ignore that no one is playing in them and you're creating a swamp)
  24. Jun 24, 2021Twitter · reply@gbrl_dick Also give a pocketful of cherry bombs to each kid upon arrival and stack your stockpile of obnoxiously large fireworks in a prominent location to entice your guests to stick around and watch you light "the big one"
  25. Jun 24, 2021Twitter · reply@gbrl_dick The secret is disposable plastic everything, even tablecloths, and responding to euro objections by pointing out "but they're red white and blue!"
  26. Jun 24, 2021Twitter · reply@jsensarma @paulg Tech also has respect for objective truth and an ethos of bowing to superior rationality when it becomes clear you're wrong... If it's just opinion without facts, you get Tabs vs Spaces... So yeah, journalism these days reminds me of a good old fashioned slashdot flame war
  27. Jun 24, 2021Twitter · reply@mattparlmer @weebertarian Yeah, jokes fall flat but people laugh when I'm sincere... an odd path through life, navigating myriad polite social fictions and apologizing for my "disability" of excessive concern for the truth when I mistakenly question a cultural truism.
  28. Jun 24, 2021Twitter · reply@mattparlmer @weebertarian ASD means I have to logic out the things everyone else seems to know by instinct... And I'm sure I still get it wrong more often than most. Quit dating once I'd had enough of playing at normal and found myself misunderstood if I was genuine.
  29. Jun 24, 2021Twitter · reply@mattparlmer @weebertarian Have done, yes. Insecurity in a partner is such a turnoff, I try to set them up for success.

  31. Jun 23, 2021Twitter · reply@weebertarian @mattparlmer As a woman, size 'em up and toss out one step down from the most intellectually challenging book they're likely to have read.. let 'em give a superior smile and "ah yes, I've read that, but you know what was even better..." 55. Jun 20, 2021Twitter · reply@mattyglesias Record a hidden camera reality TV show where friends set up their needle-phobic bro to be bullied into a public vaxx at Coyote Ugly.
  56. Jun 20, 2021Twitter · reply@mattyglesias The best thing they could do would be to pay a bunch of MAGA-land celebs to do pro-vaxx ads, restock the vaxx lotteries with front-row season tickets for top college football teams, and hire strippers to administer J&J shots at bars.

  63. Jun 20, 2021Twitter · reply@BlckCatBlckSky It seems like a lot of people are seriously unhappy about their student loans, so maybe it shouldn't be "exactly" the same?

  68. Jun 20, 2021Twitter · reply@peregrine @granitestatelad @Crey1959 @mattyglesias @Noahpinion Also admittedly they were the most fun courses, along with DS&A and automata.
  69. Jun 20, 2021Twitter · reply@peregrine @granitestatelad @Crey1959 @mattyglesias @Noahpinion I've used various bits over the years... Maybe the paradigm should shift away from 4 yrs Ed at beginning of career towards incremental Ed as needed, but if you have to prep someone all at once I think these courses are important, and last longer than learning any particular tech
  70. Jun 20, 2021Twitter · reply@granitestatelad @Crey1959 @peregrine @mattyglesias @Noahpinion Probability, Logic, Discrete math, Linear Alg, Numerical Analysis, Graph Theory all very useful for coders.

  74. Jun 16, 2021Twitter · reply@BlckCatBlckSky Ok, specifically thinking of a grocery coop where I'd considered making a loan as a member-owner, but reading the terms decided against.. biz dev consultant said 90% of coop loans are repaid on time.. risk vs return seemed worse than S&P ETF
  75. Jun 16, 2021Twitter · reply@mattyglesias I'd also point out that we are very open to nontraditional backgrounds- code academy, whatever... We do coding task interviews- as long as someone proves they can do the work, it is actually better to hire people with diverse lived experience.
  76. Jun 16, 2021Twitter · reply@mattyglesias My co has applicants do a quantitative aptitude test which is probably pretty damn correlated with IQ but technically isn't IQ - avoids culture-specific references, more justifiably related to the actual job. We only talk to the top 20% of applicants, it is our biggest filter.
  77. Jun 16, 2021Twitter · reply@matthuang @tylercowen It's funny how people pit DeFi against traditional banks, when banks are working on blockchain projects.. likely outcome is that banks are still the way most people interact with the financial system, but the system's innards are made more secure by blockchain.
  78. Jun 16, 2021Twitter · reply@BlckCatBlckSky Yeah, it is hard for coops to raise money... Imo the reason for this is the risk of failure vs limited upside.
  79. Jun 16, 2021Twitter · reply@ValaAfshar @elonmusk Elon has really aged since his SNL appearance! 😮

  81. Jun 15, 2021Twitter · reply@pottsmark @Twitter @ARLnowDOTcom 100% agree ... 89. Jun 15, 2021Twitter · reply@BlckCatBlckSky @_curiousyellow I fell in love with a guy, dated for a year, stopped seeing three other people to focus on him, but didn't learn his name until after we broke up (met in a loud coffee shop and couldn't hear him introduce himself, too embarrassed to ask later)

  100. Jun 15, 2021Twitter · reply@AndyfromTucson @mattyglesias I'm not alarmed because I don't really care about the continuation of the species and if it happens within my lifetime, what an epic way to go.
