  2. Jun 11, 2021Twitter · reply@FastCompany But were the stories false, or just unverified by human intellect?
  3. Jun 11, 2021Twitter · reply@BlckCatBlckSky @ImagineNoFuture Sorry, I'm bad at humor, that was meant to be sarcastic!
  4. Jun 11, 2021Twitter · reply@ImagineNoFuture @BlckCatBlckSky I mean, the alternatives are carbon-emitting jealousy-inducing (but employment-creating) conspicuous consumption, corrupting political donations / coercive charitable foundations, or just burning it to reduce money supply and precipitate a recession
  5. Jun 11, 2021Twitter · reply@RationalEtienne @elonmusk I read them all on childhood family vacations... we'd each pack a bag of clothes, a bag of books, and a favorite board game... Anyway I just think Asimov deserves his own hour of coverage between the Mars mission and robotics/AI ethics
  6. Jun 11, 2021Twitter · reply@RationalEtienne @elonmusk Don't forget Asimov!!!

  9. Jun 11, 2021Twitter · reply@rehatttt Personally I think we're implementing God by building a Superintelligence I'm looking forward to living in a world where evildoers are struck down by drone-laser-lightning.
  10. Jun 11, 2021Twitter · reply@AlwaysUhhJustin @ATabarrok US intel tech funded off the books... Don't underestimate the obfuscating power of "need to know"
  11. Jun 11, 2021Twitter · reply@tedfrank @Aliquickk @ATabarrok Or maybe I'm unusually aware of the disgusting frequency of pedophilia due to cybersecurity work- you'd be shocked and appalled at how often child porn is found
  12. Jun 11, 2021Twitter · reply@tedfrank @Aliquickk @ATabarrok But if you just go by the phrase in the poll... Consider Dominos at 2029 K St NW, Washington, DC 20006... odds that a pedo has tried something horrid in the parking garage below must be higher than the other three options?
  13. Jun 11, 2021Twitter · reply@Liam95952808 @ImagineNoFuture @BlckCatBlckSky (Sticking to my own background...) https://t.co/daS02OjgsR
  14. Jun 11, 2021Twitter · reply@ATabarrok Considering the disturbingly high number of pedos, and the number of pizza shops in DC...
  15. Jun 11, 2021Twitter · reply@yunginnanet @LibbyInPhilly ♥️💕❤️
  16. Jun 11, 2021Twitter · reply@BlckCatBlckSky Lol, only when they wear trucker hats "ironically"
  17. Jun 11, 2021Twitter · reply@slyduda @ctrlshifti Just going by personal experience, at the employee-owned co it seemed like execs feared the tantrum-throwing employees; at my current co one guy at the top sets the tone and can make judgement calls. For ex he once offered to loan me $40K when I was stressed over a bank .
  18. Jun 11, 2021Twitter · reply@BlckCatBlckSky But is it about current economic status or heritage? Luckily techie and hillbilly are pretty similar- free tees from work/suppliers, hoodie when it's chilly, old comfy stained jeans and scuffed up work boots.
  19. Jun 11, 2021Twitter · reply@slyduda @ctrlshifti I'm sure they exist many places, I'm just saying that being employee-owned wasn't a panacea. My current employer is an sole-proprietor-CEO who believes in "psychological safety at work" and I'm happy with my job.
  20. Jun 11, 2021Twitter · reply@ne0liberal Evil fun- anytime you create a startup that competes with one particular feature provided by the platform, it is suddenly anti-competitive for them to continue the feature in-house... How many Googlettes can we create? 🤔
  21. Jun 11, 2021Twitter · reply@slyduda @ctrlshifti My particular experience wasn't stressful due to market forces, it just seemed dysfunctional and inefficient and willing to tolerate low-EQ behavior from employees without repercussions.
  22. Jun 11, 2021Twitter · reply@ctrlshifti I've also worked at small businesses owned by my family, for private "family" companies, and for public companies, and had close friends who are independent consultants. Each has pros and cons, but imo the private fiefdoms run by a patrician family are the best for employees.
  23. Jun 11, 2021Twitter · reply@ctrlshifti I've worked at an employee-owned company and it was as dysfunctional as any other, maybe worse. I've also known a lot of career feds- more job security and good benefits, but also risk averse execs, no fun events, and lots of deadweight colleagues.
  24. Jun 11, 2021Twitter · reply@DDoSGUARD Who are you peered with and where?

  32. Jun 10, 2021Twitter · reply@waitbutwhy "any other creator" includes artists so of course Yes.
  33. Jun 10, 2021Twitter · reply@AndyfromTucson @mattyglesias Heritability of intelligence and personality traits, I'm assuming an adopted kid would be closer to average than MattY. His Twitter feed vs an average DC elementary teacher... I don't see it ending well.
  34. Jun 10, 2021Twitter · reply@AndyfromTucson @mattyglesias Interesting... I doubt it works out in practice. I was exiled from classes to study at my own pace in the hallway after being too helpful to my classmates, basically pushed into homeschooling. Unless he adopted?
  35. Jun 10, 2021Twitter · reply@AndyfromTucson @mattyglesias Hah ok, back to my first reaction- DC schools are the likely end state of the current reform movement- choose between paying for private school or barely learning to read in a lowest-common-denominator public school.

  38. Jun 10, 2021Twitter · reply@chasenye @Social_MattM @mattyglesias Ok this is not what I understood from the articles I've read, and seems counter to the cancellation of HS entrance exams because the exam scores skew to favor Asians. If everyone is really going to learn calculus in 10th grade I'm in favor of the change.
  39. Jun 10, 2021Twitter · reply@FBI @TheHackersNews Lol don't take this seriously unless you're a big company providing an essential service, and even then... The FBI takes *months* to ask for data and sometimes we've already purged it due to retention policies.
  40. Jun 10, 2021Twitter · reply@Social_MattM @mattyglesias You can use the "advanced" class name but if you put non-advanced kids in the class and maintain the usual emphasis on not letting anyone fall behind, then instruction will quickly revert to the regular class pace.
  41. Jun 10, 2021Twitter · reply@mattyglesias Are you planning to send your kids to DCPS?! I had not realized their reputation had improved so much.
  42. Jun 9, 2021Twitter · post@TakisKarantonis Takis wins my post-election contest for first candidate to remove all campaign signs from local medians. Thank you for respecting the community even after the votes have been cast!
  43. Jun 9, 2021Twitter · post@Lopez4VA I can personally dispute this headline- working at Walter Reed CC, saw Alfonso Lopez sweating in 90+ deg heat to greet each voter for several hours on election day- no cameras, no VIPs to impress, he was doing the work https://www.insidenova.com/news/arlington/del-alfonso-lopez-wins-renomination-without-breaking-a-sweat/article_a5f9b9ea-c919-11e…

  49. Jun 9, 2021Twitter · reply@WellPaidGeek I believe it- painful to read = more independent implementations of the same thing
  50. Jun 9, 2021Twitter · reply@AndrewTollemach @beta_co_ @Noahpinion The tax avoidance is an instant ~40% rate of return, so even if poor investments plus management yields persistent losses you are still better off than paying the tax.
  51. Jun 9, 2021Twitter · reply@engineers_feed And this explains why Jeff Bezos will be on Blue Origin's first rocket to space😏
  52. Jun 9, 2021Twitter · reply@AndrewTollemach @beta_co_ @Noahpinion But you're still better off because you won't have paid taxes on the interim gains...
  53. Jun 9, 2021Twitter · reply@RationalEtienne @elonmusk @MattWallace888 Elon's life makes me feel very smol... I admire his ability to scale ("cattle not pets") at the same time my own life is all about intrinsically small unique things- intricate original art, permaculture gardens, context-sensitive contemporary architecture...

  55. Jun 9, 2021Twitter · reply@jackquick7 @davidcrooksfo @mattyglesias Valuations change over time- you'd have to recalculate and relitigate every year, so you'd always have several years of taxes pending legal action. The labor that goes into tax compliance/avoidance is a waste of human capital, don't multiply it.

  57. Jun 9, 2021Twitter · reply@waitbutwhy This just drives math education into the home environment where parental inequality is undiluted by the education system.
  58. Jun 8, 2021Twitter · reply@TakisKarantonis Congrats and hope you get some rest before November! Thanks for listening and following up on constituent concerns- together we will make Arlington a biophilic city!
  59. Jun 8, 2021Twitter · reply@davidcrooksfo @mattyglesias We DO require appraisals / valuations at death, the result is that estate taxes take several years and usually litigation to settle. Thus applying the estate tax valuation paradigm to everyone every year is infeasible, wealth tax would have to come up with a simpler method.
  60. Jun 7, 2021Twitter · reply@BlckCatBlckSky We also have a Dem primary election tomorrow, so I should be sleeping!
  61. Jun 7, 2021Twitter · reply@BlckCatBlckSky Yeah, I feel like we have less super-wealthy political types and also less homeless-poor than DC, more of the nonprofits and career govt types plus a lot of small immigrant-owned businesses, but it probably averages out about the same.
  62. Jun 7, 2021Twitter · reply@BlckCatBlckSky And all this is not to dispute that Arlington is very *privileged* or that it is less Black than DC, but I love that my zipcode in Arlington has no majority race http://www.city-data.com/zips/22204.html
  63. Jun 7, 2021Twitter · reply@BlckCatBlckSky Oh, I was quoting household median income (the upper of the two lines) because I figured 131K would have to be household not individual. https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/arlingtoncountyvirginia/PST045219
  64. Jun 7, 2021Twitter · reply@BlckCatBlckSky Arlington race/ethnic mix is pretty close to the natl avg- 61% white-non-hispanic, 16% Hispanic, 10% African Amer, 11% Asian. 23% foreign-born, 30% speak lang other than Eng at home, and 75% have at least bachelors degree.

  66. Jun 7, 2021Twitter · reply@BlckCatBlckSky You're missing a "1" I assume? DC median hasta be closer to $131K? Arlington median is $120K and I know rich people like Gillibrand look down on us as "soulless" so...

  68. Jun 7, 2021Twitter · reply@JosephVVallace @1478397vw 😞 sigh, too true. The Economist is my fave and even they make a LOT of mistakes on topics I happen to know (so by extension I assume I'm consuming inaccuracies in stories where I don't have a better source of info)
  69. Jun 7, 2021Twitter · reply@BrandonLBradfor Otoh credit to her for seeing a future in a Jacquard loom "The Analytical Engine does not occupy common ground with mere 'calculating machines.' It holds a position wholly its own, and the considerations it suggests are more interesting in their nature."
  70. Jun 7, 2021Twitter · reply@AndreMillaire @jesss_codes Spent today refactoring so I can implement a new feature more cleanly- think I was about minus 50 LOC for the day 😛
  71. Jun 7, 2021Twitter · reply@BrandonLBradfor Ada Lovelace- I love her, but... "That brain of mine is something more than merely mortal; as time will show." 72. Jun 7, 2021Twitter · reply@1478397vw @JosephVVallace 🤣 I have worked on a bit of ad-tech.... NDAs so can't say much, but I *really* wish intelligent journalists would dig into

  74. Jun 7, 2021Twitter · reply@1478397vw @JosephVVallace Lol, if Tesla brings the cost down to the point they can run ad-supported free robotaxis, would that be considered "helping the world"?

  81. Jun 7, 2021Twitter · reply@lisperati Idk, to me this is actually bullish- people have been wondering why he is stepping down as CEO, this is a very good answer that implies he's otherwise still engaged and wasn't forced out over a secret scandal.
  82. Jun 7, 2021Twitter · reply@anticommiemommy @mattyglesias Interesting, might be a regional difference... Most of the contractors, farm, apiaries, independent truckers, small medical practices in WV do not rely on social media. 91. Jun 6, 2021Twitter · reply@mattyglesias But Matty, centrists are the one shared enemy that bring together the right and the left... You'll have to boot a lot of incumbents out of office before governing by consensus (and please, remove Cruz from my environs asap).
  92. Jun 6, 2021Twitter · reply@Teslarati @Writer_01001101 I've also heard tales of ships being stuck in port unable to unload because a ransomware attack had locked up the manifests.... Cybersecurity matters 😛
  93. Jun 6, 2021Twitter · reply@Teslarati @Writer_01001101 (recently worked on an app with union users- changing out the backend and non-union workflow, but had to keep the union-facing screens identical down to the tab order)
  94. Jun 6, 2021Twitter · reply@Teslarati @Writer_01001101 Good for Tesla- many logistics companies are still technically backwards with mainframes and printouts... Including American port operations, dominated by unions that use any new automation to renegotiate for higher wages
  95. Jun 6, 2021Twitter · reply@m_demerjian @AdamRackis @alexbdebrie This, so much this!!!
  96. Jun 6, 2021Twitter · reply@JDVance1 We should at least uncap visas and green cards for young English-speakers with STEM college degrees and $5000 in their bank account. They are ineligible for welfare and their economic contributions would be good for all of us.
  97. Jun 6, 2021Twitter · reply@applepie880 @WholesomeMeme This is so true, all my favorite topics I can barely share with family and friends because they don't have anything to say in response and then it isn't a conversation. Makes me sad but I choose to spend a lot of time alone because NTs are boring and I'd rather daydream.
  98. Jun 6, 2021Twitter · reply@gasstationcig @WholesomeMeme I think the trick is to ID the type of convo to apply the right pattern, and watch carefully for signs you've made a mistake (in which case find a way to be quiet but with encouraging nonverbals till the other person takes a clearer lead)
  99. Jun 6, 2021Twitter · reply@WholesomeMeme I have learned this works when there's a lull in the conversation and the emotional tone is neutral. If someone is babbling, don't interrupt just keep w the eye contact and nodding and open posture. If there's a lull but emotions, reflect back what you're hearing as a question.
