  1. Jun 13, 2021Twitter · reply@cassidoo Unpopular opinion: the best thing a young dev can do is to close the laptop, silence the phone, and have F2F whiteboard design conversations with their analysts and architects.
  2. Jun 13, 2021Twitter · reply@ItCentrist @Grace_Segers Lol, I think it does- too much neurodiversity makes it hard to connect with most people, and a strong web of relationships is supposed to be the most important ingredient for happiness.
  3. Jun 13, 2021Twitter · reply@ItCentrist @Grace_Segers High IQ, but not too high- 120 to 125 is optimal https://www.inc.com/jt-odonnell/science-says-120-is-the-optimal-iq-to-be-considere.html

  8. Jun 13, 2021Twitter · reply@MWillJr Otoh I would completely support the "talk to a medical professional not a celebrity" argument
  9. Jun 13, 2021Twitter · reply@WholeMarsBlog Buy what you know (where you can beat the market), ETF the rest for diversification. Ignore the hype cycle.
  10. Jun 13, 2021Twitter · reply@GreenValley_Guy @mattyglesias I know it has helped my portfolio, like insane returns... otoh I worry if inflation ramps up maybe it cancels out? Or the 30s might have subpar returns as boomers retire? So I keep saving anyway.
  11. Jun 13, 2021Twitter · reply@waitbutwhy The crypto industry is the new cigarette industry 😞

  13. Jun 13, 2021Twitter · reply@AbeLincoln1104 @Grace_Segers I have ASD, can you explain? When I've told people the story IRL they laugh...?
  14. Jun 13, 2021Twitter · reply@hiimanshusinghx @ValaAfshar I think there's a bit more to it- when I listen for too long without speaking and then ask the obvious (to me) question I get yelled at for not speaking up sooner. It is tricky to learn to interrupt appropriately when you don't read social cues!
  15. Jun 13, 2021Twitter · reply@melbataj Understand compound interest, expected value, and how to do their own taxes. Meal planning, grocery shopping, and cooking several basic meals How to do laundry including ironing, how to mend a seam, sew a button, remove a stain
  16. Jun 13, 2021Twitter · reply@AbeLincoln1104 @Grace_Segers It is accurate, but also meant to be amusing and give insight into how the rich stay rich by cutting out the middle man.
  17. Jun 13, 2021Twitter · reply@DixitMani1 Oh and at a bare minimum, remove any dead code (unreferenced and/or commented out), fix any warnings, and run your team's formatter to clean up whitespace
  18. Jun 13, 2021Twitter · reply@DixitMani1 Refactor so each function is working at a single level of abstraction, avoid excessive layers of nesting, choose parameters to minimize dependencies between functions and maximize reuse, follow established patterns, and name things sensibly.
  19. Jun 13, 2021Twitter · reply@RationalEtienne @HEAVEN_1991 @elonmusk @Cointelegraph Well, there are a few things you can buy with it... Cybersecurity work leads to some interesting places....
  20. Jun 13, 2021Twitter · reply@AbeLincoln1104 @Grace_Segers Oh, another tip- negotiate from a position of strength- I pre-qualified with several banks, negotiated for lower rates and fees, then showed the best deal to my parents and asked if they'd like to make a better offer. We managed to find a rate that made us both happy 🙂
  21. Jun 13, 2021Twitter · reply@AbeLincoln1104 @Grace_Segers Oh and employed me at family businesses from early childhood through college, so I learned the value of money before I was old enough to get a credit card.
  22. Jun 13, 2021Twitter · reply@AbeLincoln1104 @Grace_Segers Lol, in my case no... The money is in illiquid investments (land being sold for datacenter construction). But they paid my community college tuition for a CS degree and bought me a Honda Civic which lasted 12 years, so...

  28. Jun 13, 2021Twitter · reply@GravelInstitute Good riddance to public education as we know it! Or at least as I knew it... Teachers were a fount of mistakes and bad information.
  29. Jun 13, 2021Twitter · reply@raunak246 @SrijanRaj6 @rajeshsawhney You want the ones who aren't available, so you seek them out and convince them to join you, rather than screening a pile of eager resumes.
  30. Jun 13, 2021Twitter · reply@jeremyjudkins 😂 I've gone through this sequence of thoughts- want a Tesla... but don't own a dedicated parking spot... Guess I'll have to buy land and build a house so I can get the whole package... Sadly I'm thinking the solar/batteries will have to come from a different provider 😢
  31. Jun 13, 2021Twitter · reply@SteveCase Living near HQ2 and hearing so much negativity about housing prices, I'm surprised this is still seen as "opportunity" by politicians. Most activists around here seem to think actual jobs are degrading and everyone should just receive UBI instead. 🙄
  32. Jun 13, 2021Twitter · reply@RationalEtienne 😢 humans are endlessly complicated and difficult. At least you know your own heart ❤️
  33. Jun 13, 2021Twitter · reply@albrgr Also, some of the stimulus money should have instead been a gift card attached to the positive test result to ensure people could afford to stay home. The more recent stimulus should have been attached to vaccination so you'd get $2K in the mail right as you became immune.
  34. Jun 13, 2021Twitter · reply@albrgr States should have stood up test teams to go out and collect samples where positive results were most likely to be found according to data- grocery store workers should've been receiving tests at their jobsite, contacts should've received home visits to collect samples, etc.
  35. Jun 13, 2021Twitter · reply@albrgr Labs should have only been paid for test results returned quickly, with bonus for speed- everyone finding out 7 days later was not helpful for contact tracing and targeted shutdowns.
  36. Jun 13, 2021Twitter · reply@albrgr Testing should have been organized to minimize community spread, not tests on-demand for people with privilege while covid spread unseen among service workers.

  47. Jun 12, 2021Twitter · reply@spicymayopacket I'd feel much better about paying taxes if the proportion was reversed- sure a bit of money for dept of war and state and national parks, but mostly keep the spending local in the community where taxpayers / voters can see the benefit
  48. Jun 12, 2021Twitter · reply@spicymayopacket Yeah, I'm baffled how my $4K / yr local property tax covers schools, local roads, fire/police, parks, libraries, elections and local govt, local court and , planning and inspections, and social services, but then another $55K of state and federal taxes for ...???

  57. Jun 12, 2021Twitter · reply@slyduda @HttpHitchHiker @ctrlshifti Why are condo associations / hoas notoriously dysfunctional, especially in retirement communities? 61. Jun 11, 2021Twitter · reply@FastCompany But were the stories false, or just unverified by human intellect?
  62. Jun 11, 2021Twitter · reply@BlckCatBlckSky @ImagineNoFuture Sorry, I'm bad at humor, that was meant to be sarcastic!
  63. Jun 11, 2021Twitter · reply@ImagineNoFuture @BlckCatBlckSky I mean, the alternatives are carbon-emitting jealousy-inducing (but employment-creating) conspicuous consumption, corrupting political donations / coercive charitable foundations, or just burning it to reduce money supply and precipitate a recession
  64. Jun 11, 2021Twitter · reply@RationalEtienne @elonmusk I read them all on childhood family vacations... we'd each pack a bag of clothes, a bag of books, and a favorite board game... Anyway I just think Asimov deserves his own hour of coverage between the Mars mission and robotics/AI ethics

  70. Jun 11, 2021Twitter · reply@tedfrank @Aliquickk @ATabarrok Or maybe I'm unusually aware of the disgusting frequency of pedophilia due to cybersecurity work- you'd be shocked and appalled at how often child porn is found
  71. Jun 11, 2021Twitter · reply@tedfrank @Aliquickk @ATabarrok But if you just go by the phrase in the poll... Consider Dominos at 2029 K St NW, Washington, DC 20006... odds that a pedo has tried something horrid in the parking garage below must be higher than the other three options?

  76. Jun 11, 2021Twitter · reply@slyduda @ctrlshifti Just going by personal experience, at the employee-owned co it seemed like execs feared the tantrum-throwing employees; at my current co one guy at the top sets the tone and can make judgement calls. For ex he once offered to loan me $40K when I was stressed over a bank .
  77. Jun 11, 2021Twitter · reply@BlckCatBlckSky But is it about current economic status or heritage? Luckily techie and hillbilly are pretty similar- free tees from work/suppliers, hoodie when it's chilly, old comfy stained jeans and scuffed up work boots.
  78. Jun 11, 2021Twitter · reply@slyduda @ctrlshifti I'm sure they exist many places, I'm just saying that being employee-owned wasn't a panacea. My current employer is an sole-proprietor-CEO who believes in "psychological safety at work" and I'm happy with my job.
  79. Jun 11, 2021Twitter · reply@ne0liberal Evil fun- anytime you create a startup that competes with one particular feature provided by the platform, it is suddenly anti-competitive for them to continue the feature in-house... How many Googlettes can we create? 🤔
  80. Jun 11, 2021Twitter · reply@slyduda @ctrlshifti My particular experience wasn't stressful due to market forces, it just seemed dysfunctional and inefficient and willing to tolerate low-EQ behavior from employees without repercussions.
  81. Jun 11, 2021Twitter · reply@ctrlshifti I've also worked at small businesses owned by my family, for private "family" companies, and for public companies, and had close friends who are independent consultants. Each has pros and cons, but imo the private fiefdoms run by a patrician family are the best for employees.
  82. Jun 11, 2021Twitter · reply@ctrlshifti I've worked at an employee-owned company and it was as dysfunctional as any other, maybe worse. I've also known a lot of career feds- more job security and good benefits, but also risk averse execs, no fun events, and lots of deadweight colleagues.

  92. Jun 10, 2021Twitter · reply@AndyfromTucson @mattyglesias Heritability of intelligence and personality traits, I'm assuming an adopted kid would be closer to average than MattY. His Twitter feed vs an average DC elementary teacher... I don't see it ending well.
  93. Jun 10, 2021Twitter · reply@AndyfromTucson @mattyglesias Interesting... I doubt it works out in practice. I was exiled from classes to study at my own pace in the hallway after being too helpful to my classmates, basically pushed into homeschooling. Unless he adopted?
  94. Jun 10, 2021Twitter · reply@AndyfromTucson @mattyglesias Hah ok, back to my first reaction- DC schools are the likely end state of the current reform movement- choose between paying for private school or barely learning to read in a lowest-common-denominator public school.

If everyone is really going to learn calculus in 10th grade I'm in favor of the change.
  98. Jun 10, 2021Twitter · reply@FBI @TheHackersNews Lol don't take this seriously unless you're a big company providing an essential service, and even then... The FBI takes *months* to ask for data and sometimes we've already purged it due to retention policies.
  99. Jun 10, 2021Twitter · reply@Social_MattM @mattyglesias You can use the "advanced" class name but if you put non-advanced kids in the class and maintain the usual emphasis on not letting anyone fall behind, then instruction will quickly revert to the regular class pace.
  100. Jun 10, 2021Twitter · reply@mattyglesias Are you planning to send your kids to DCPS?! I had not realized their reputation had improved so much.
