- Jun 4, 2021Twitter · reply@Jai__Malik Issue 5- to be a true all-round cybersecurity expert you need to understand the *entire* stack of abstractions, from hardware exploits and crypto maths to network protocols to application layer to UX and human factors- not easy, you'll always have a bit of imposter syndrome
- Jun 4, 2021Twitter · reply@Jai__Malik Issue 4- most coders prefer to write code than read it, prefer greenfield to legacy complexity, prefer creating something new rather than protecting someone else's creation - basically, it isn't fun work for the average dev personality
- Jun 4, 2021Twitter · reply@Jai__Malik Issue 3- security often works against other goals (at least superficially), you will be the team scold and naysayer, with all the popularity that entails.
- Jun 4, 2021Twitter · reply@Jai__Malik Issue 2- it is difficult for anyone outside the field to evaluate the quality of your work; failure is sudden, public and painful; success is unseen, and tbh many people "succeed" through luck rather than skill (rather like hedge fund managers)
- Jun 4, 2021Twitter · reply@Jai__Malik Issue 1- as with covid, some people want absolute assurances (which don't exist, given real world constraints) ... as the "expert" you will have to mediate countless debates between the risk averse and the reckless, both sides arguing without a firm grasp of the facts
- Jun 4, 2021Twitter · reply@Jai__Malik Security is a thankless job - anyone smart and informed enough to realize this will avoid broadcasting their expertise lest they be saddled with the work.
- Jun 4, 2021Twitter · reply@FastCompany Working for / with the government would be more attractive if political leaders and pundits were not so blatantly dismissive of facts that don't suit their narrative. 1 + 1 does not equal 3 no matter how convenient it would be or how warm and fuzzy it would make someone feel.
- Jun 4, 2021Twitter · reply@dfee @atShruti Idk, there's a certain appeal to moving around to help with the biggest problems- analyzing the PMF, setting architectural direction, making major hires, troubleshooting a scalability crisis without being committed to a single company for years.

- Jun 4, 2021Twitter · reply@geekethics My plan is to invest in a lifestyle that doesn't rely on the monetary system so I don't need to worry about inflation or taxes. We don't have a human capital tax so the benefits of DIY remain with the producer- hobbies all day, time bank with neighbors, life will be ok.
- Jun 4, 2021Twitter · reply@geekethics Yeah I'm convinced our current system is headed for a meltdown and feel helpless to influence the outcome. Regardless of how they shuffle the chairs, an economy where most people feel entitled to consume without producing is going to have issues.
- Jun 4, 2021Twitter · reply@pbodycoltrane @brianbeutler Boo, everyone is (rightly) angry about Trump tryin to overturn the election but then happy to suggest usurping the will of voters in other states (because if you actually left it to WV to replace Manchin you would not get a Dem replacement)
- Jun 3, 2021Twitter · reply@morninggloria @GreatDismal 🙋 unless they inflate / tax away the Tesla earnings in my Roth IRA...
- Jun 3, 2021Twitter · reply@elonmusk In my experience it is either that, or the opposite https://t.co/SR2UTnEidx
- Jun 3, 2021Twitter · reply@slashdot Nooooooo 😭
- Jun 3, 2021Twitter · reply@Thomask207 @engineers_feed Vint Cerf was my commencement speaker, I'm still a little bitter that no one outside the CS dept understood how cool this was 😎
- Jun 3, 2021Twitter · reply@mattyglesias (funny part being that my hobby is gardening- so, plenty of digging holes either way ... Agency matters!)
- Jun 3, 2021Twitter · reply@mattyglesias I mean they have a point- if I got UBI I'd immediately quit my job to spend more time on hobbies... If I had to spend the day digging and refilling holes for my check, I'd probably stick to mucking around with the internet
- Jun 3, 2021Twitter · reply@kcristol @NoVaTransit Fare free would be even better 🙂 good for the environment, low wage workers, and tourism; would speed up bus loading, reduce parking pressure, and save the expense of the fare collection system
- Jun 3, 2021Twitter · reply@TheJackForge AWS will launch code help aaS .. Only to see devs hop to other sites asking how to access CloudCorrect .. Which will be an obscure IAM permission, which by default emails your dumbest questions to your boss .. From there it will be great .. until you get your first month's bill.
- Jun 3, 2021Twitter · quote💃 yay I had read some research about these systems, been wondering when we'd see them used... https://x.com/slashdot/status/1400553472416653314

- Jun 3, 2021Twitter · reply@SmithInAmerica The scary part is how cryptocurrency has enabled ransomers to get away with the loot- we are at risk if terrorists can use the same financial network - I hope the Biden admin has defenses against this?
- Jun 3, 2021Twitter · reply@mattyglesias Idk, I find it quixotically hopeful that so many people *care* so deeply about things have nothing to do with their day-to-day
- Jun 3, 2021Twitter · reply@mattschaar @Jai__Malik One surprising lesson learned- 11pm calls with my India dev team went *much* better when I was so drunk the room was spinning. Objectively more forward momentum and fewer miscommunications uncovered in subsequent days. What's the consulting version of the Ballmer Peak?
- Jun 3, 2021Twitter · reply@mattyglesias Inflationary pressure yes, "dangerous" ... Idk? Let's go full MMT- abolish the IRS, the inflation *is* the tax.

- Jun 3, 2021Twitter · reply@chrismanfrank No, really don't- if you teach kids what it means to "know about" something, they will be perpetually disappointed by "experts" for the rest of their lives. Low expectations are the key to happiness!

- Jun 2, 2021Twitter · reply@mattschaar @Jai__Malik At worst you will learn to pull yourself together for 8am meetings despite 12 hr workdays followed by an hour on the hotel treadmill and then 6 hrs drinking on the company credit card with "handsy" bosses.
- Jun 2, 2021Twitter · reply@XpogchampX @Supermantibody @teslavibes Gahhhh! My fed taxes the last five years were $35K, $77K, $30K, $46K, and $20K ... How do people get away with paying so little, what am I doing wrong?!?

- Jun 2, 2021Twitter · reply@MillionGardens Yes... Sadly my community garden stretches along a busy bike path with no shade, so there's not good place for socializing- I hadn't considered talking to folks at the farmers market instead!
- Jun 2, 2021Twitter · reply@scottreuwho @ezraklein Yes fair enough, I'm just wondering who's going to grow the food if everyone can take benefits indefinitely? Not saying existing private corps are the answer, but what is? I grow some of my own food but not yet 100%
- Jun 2, 2021Twitter · quote🤣 that's my state! https://x.com/thehill/status/1400119546078433284
- Jun 2, 2021Twitter · reply@mattyglesias Sounds like a fun DIY project in your future 😉
- Jun 2, 2021Twitter · reply@scottreuwho @ezraklein I was thinking of the defense production act- people expect the government to ensure supply of certain goods, and those goods require labor to produce... So to an extent I DO expect the government to incentivize working over not working.
- Jun 2, 2021Twitter · reply@NickGalluzzo2 @ezraklein I mean, I assume the answer is to raise prices... Either demand will support the increase or you have to conclude that the market doesn't want what you're selling and it's time to close up shop.
- Jun 2, 2021Twitter · quoteGood idea, we need to make gardening a more social community experience https://x.com/MillionGardens/status/1400138734578933764
- Jun 2, 2021Twitter · reply@scottreuwho @ezraklein I never said anyone should be "forced" to take a job, or that any particular person doesn't have good reasons for making a choice not to , or that employers shouldn't raise wages. I'm just saying, if our economy is producing less goods, there are less goods to go around.
- Jun 2, 2021Twitter · postFeels like a good time to quote @elonmusk "If you don't make stuff, there is no stuff" ... "This notion that you can just sort of send checks out to everybody and things will be fine is not true.”
- Jun 2, 2021Twitter · reply@ezraklein @scottreuwho This is fine, but I don't want to hear whining about inflation when there are more dollars and yet less goods & services available to buy.

- Jun 1, 2021Twitter · reply@mattyglesias Junk it only after quietly tracing the criminal association recorded in its ledgers and coordinating arrest warrants for all within reach. Luckily there's capacity in the prison system after the covid early releases. Ban the rest from visas and banking.

- May 30, 2021Twitter · reply@NateSilver538 I think you're giving them too much credit to call it "political" - they just don't want their conference junkets limited out of concern that a lab leak could take out too many of the people needed to fight the ensuing pandemic.
- May 30, 2021Twitter · reply@blockfolio If only the Ashburn DCs would install tropical greenhouses on top to benefit from the heat... Replace the acolytes' Mtn Dew with fresh green juice and send them topside for an occasional walk in the sun, maybe they will remember their human origin.
